Background of the study
Terms of endearment in Igbo are imbued with deep emotional and cultural significance, often reflecting complex social relationships and family values. In Enugu, these terms are central to interpersonal communication, used to express affection, respect, and intimacy. This study investigates the subtle semantic nuances in Igbo terms of endearment, exploring how variations in usage, tone, and context affect their meaning. Field research involving interviews with speakers, analysis of familial interactions, and examination of media representations reveals that these terms can convey different shades of meaning depending on factors such as age, social status, and situational context (Uche, 2023). The research employs qualitative discourse analysis to decode the layers of meaning and examines how these nuances contribute to the construction of personal and communal identities. Furthermore, it explores the influence of modernization and bilingualism on the preservation and evolution of traditional endearment expressions, shedding light on the dynamic interplay between language, emotion, and culture in contemporary Igbo society (Ibekwe, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although Igbo terms of endearment are widely used, there is limited systematic research on the semantic nuances that differentiate these expressions. Preliminary evidence indicates that shifts in cultural practices and language contact may lead to dilution or alteration of these nuances, thereby impacting interpersonal communication and cultural identity. This study aims to fill this gap by documenting and analyzing the subtle semantic differences in terms of endearment among Igbo speakers in Enugu.
Objectives of the study

  • To identify key Igbo terms of endearment and their semantic variations.
  • To analyze the contextual factors that influence their nuanced meanings.
  • To evaluate the impact of cultural and linguistic change on these expressions.
    Research questions
  • What are the main Igbo terms of endearment used in Enugu?
  • How do contextual factors shape their nuanced meanings?
  • What effects do cultural and linguistic changes have on these terms?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it uncovers the intricate semantic layers in Igbo terms of endearment, contributing to our understanding of cultural expression and interpersonal communication. Its findings will inform language preservation and educational initiatives, reinforcing cultural identity (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to investigating semantic nuances in Igbo terms of endearment among speakers in Enugu and does not include other forms of interpersonal language or regions.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantic Nuances: Subtle differences in meaning and connotation.
  • Terms of Endearment: Words or expressions used to convey affection.
